Island
Time Retreat with Lee Brockington
Thanksgiving
at the Beach
"Each year my week at Sea View gives me the opportunity to
re-charge my batteries. I enjoy doing nothing if you consider time on the
beach reading and visiting with old friends doing nothing."
Island
Time Retreat with Lee Brockington
Sunday, March
22 - Tuesday, March 24, 2009
Spend
three days at the oceanfront Sea View Inn with “local treasure”
Lee Brockington as your history and southern culture instructor. Why
leave Pawleys Island, when so many work so hard to arrive? Save
gas as we travel to another world. Check in for a girl’s
island getaway, dine on three southern meals daily, laugh at stories
from the porch, and study island history. Field trips (traveling just
a few yards to the east and west) include beach ecology and creek
conversation. Bring your pajamas for fireside chats. Arrive March 22
in time for Sunday dinner and depart Tuesday, March 24 after
breakfast.
After this
time, you will be refreshed and informed and ready to explore our
history-rich area on your own. Lee will provide you with some
excellent suggestions for side trips, tours and excursions, but none
will compare with the unique opportunity of this retreat.
Bring
comfortable clothes for beach, creek, porch and
fireside. Layers are always in order at the beach in the fall, so you can load them on
or peel them off as needed. BYOB, flashlight, flip flops,
bedroom shoes, journal, art pad, doodle pad. Linens are
provided.
Lee
Brockington is senior interpreter at Hobcaw Barony (11 rice
plantations purchased in 1905 by millionaire Bernard Baruch) and is a
former curator and history consultant with 26 years experience in
programs, lectures and research. She is the editor of the book,
Pawleys Island :Stories From the Porch, published by the Pawleys
Island Civic Association and Plantation Between the Waters: A Brief
History of Hobcaw Barony, released in April, 2006.

31st Annual Artists' Workshop
Friday, April 24 - Friday, May 1, 2009
Instructor: Betty Brown It’s time to put the Spring Artists’
Week Workshop at Sea View Inn on your calendar. The annual
Pawleys
Island
workshop
continues with its 31st year, combining great painting locations with
gorgeous spring weather. The charming, shabby chic inn and three meals
a day of low country cooking add up to provide the ingredients and
ambience for a most enjoyable workshop. Alex Powers began the workshop
in 1978, Betty Brown began studying with Alex Powers in 1975, and
became instructor for Artists’ Week 2002, turning another page in
the history of art at Sea View Inn.
Betty takes the artists to a new location each day. She has
scouted out the most delightful painting spots for plein air painting.
These include area plantations,
Brookgreen
Gardens, and Atalaya. The week is informal and relaxed. Students are
encouraged to do as little or as much as they desire. All levels are
welcome. The groups are small enough
to get individual attention. You can work on your on, or avail
yourself of her instruction that focuses on the principles
of design, color, and “learning to see.” Her own etched in stone
commandments are geared toward helping individual painters find a
positive attitude and direction in their uniqe approaches Betty
discourages a competitive atmosphere and seeks to provide
encouragement while striving for excellence. Betty will work or
demonstrate in watercolor, but she is capable of helping in the media
of your choice. The group winds down the day looking at and discussing
each day’s paintings. Evenings can be spent watching videos or
slides of other artists’ work. If a rainy day occurs, we reserve a
time for painting the wait staff/models.
ABOUT THE ARTIST: Betty Brown began studying painting in 1975, and has
studied under many nationally recognized
teachers. She holds degrees from
Queens
University
in
Charlotte
,
NC
, and the
University
of
North Carolina
at
Wilmington
where she graduated with Honors in Art. She is a member of several
professional organizations and is a Program Grant recipient. Her
painting trips to
Europe
and across the
United States
provide a focus on the landscape, even though the figure has long been
a captivating challenge. Betty is also interested in Book Art and
writing. Betty has extensive teaching experience in museum classes,
workshops at
John
C.
Campbell
Folk
School
, other regional workshops, and with private students. Her work has
been exhibited nationally and is found in the
permanent collection of the
Cameron
Art Museum
and corporate and private collections. Her work can be seen at New
Elements Gallery in
Wilmington
,
NC
.
If you would like to discuss anything about the art side of the
workshop, please email Betty Brown at bbbstudio@ec.rr.com.
